Description:

RS232 is a standard communication port for industry equipment. Unfortunately, modern computers don’t have it anymore. Arduino only has a USB port and a TTL UART interface. In order to talk to an industry equipment, we can add a RS232 port to Arduino using this handy RS232 shield.

I bought this to read RS232 output from a piece of lab equipment. I was disappointed there were no instructions, but then realized you don't need any. It's simply the same as the USB port on the Arduino. serialRead and serialWrite go to both ports. Ok except my lab equipment did not like that and kept re-setting itself. During program debugging I had to remove and replace the shield several times because you can't upload with the shield attached to the Arduino. Other than that, the product works great. Couldn't there be a dip switch to disable the board while uploading?..

I needed to use an arduino with a RS232 device and didn't want to create my own. Works great. I also bent the two pins for TX and RX out of the way and instead used two jumper wires to connect to a software port and utilize softwareserial so I can still program and debug while connected to the RS232 device. I'm happy to see this shield made available for the Arduino platform. With a DB-9, level-shifted RS-232 port, the Arduino can communicate with a wide variety of laboratory test equipment and industrial automation hardware. There are two free channels on the MAX232 chip on this board. For those with a steady soldering hand, a "blue wire" modification can bring out level-shifted CTS and RTS signals to pins of your choice on the headers, for use with devices requiring hardware flow control. Note: The Arduino Uno cannot be programmed via its USB interface with the RS-232 shield in place. (The logic-level Rx output from the MAX232 chip interferes.) So, you'll probably need a USB-Serial adapter for subsequent programming...
